What is the National Genotyping Programme (NGP)?
The NGP is a collaboration between the Department of Agriculture, ICBF, industry partners and farmers. It aims to genotype (DNA test) every calf born on participating farms up until 2027.
It’s as simple as using a special tissue tag at birth, which allows:
- Accurate parentage verification
- Reliable genetic indexes like EBI, Eurostar and Dairy Beef Index
- Better breeding decisions from just a few weeks old
- More traceable and sustainable cattle, which boosts Ireland’s global reputation
What’s New in Phase 3?
Phase 3 opened on June 10th, and spots are limited. If accepted:
- All your breeding animals are genotyped free in year one
- From 2024–2027, you’ll pay just €6 per calf, with the rest funded
- You’ll receive quicker, more reliable breeding info from ICBF
This is a voluntary programme, but by joining, you’re committing to genotyping all calves born on your farm until 2027 and using the correct tagging system from ICBF-approved tag suppliers.
