Limerick alongside her father John,\n        milking <strong>150 spring-calving Friesian cows<\/strong> with plans\n        to expand to 170 next year. Both farm full time, with additional help\n        brought in during the busy calving period. When things ease off on the\n        home farm, Louise works part-time as a relief milker with FRS.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        Outside farming, Louise is heavily involved in Macra na Feirme at both\n        club and county level. In addition, she scooped the\n        <strong>Queen of the Land award in 2018<\/strong> and serves as secretary\n        of the local and county vintage club. Limerick.<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h2>Technology to support an expanding herd<\/h2>\n\n      <div class=\"hw-inline\">\n        <div class=\"hw-inline-text\">\n          <p>\n            As the herd grows towards 170 cows, Louise and John have turned\n            to technology to keep pace. Louise first heard about Herdwatch at\n            the National Ploughing Championships. She became more familiar with\n            it through her work with FRS. I use it for everything from registering a calf to ordering replacement tags, weighing calves when they&#8217;re born, putting animals into groups, and batched dosing. It&#8217;s just so much easier to keep track of everything now.&#8221;\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h2>Calf registration \u2014 done before the second tag goes on<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        During calving season, Herdwatch has transformed how calves are\n        registered on the Crowley farm. Previously, registration was done online\n        on a PC after the event. Now, Louise scans the tag at the calf&#8217;s side\n        and the registration is complete before she has even put on the second\n        ear tag.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"hw-quote\">\n        &#8220;When I&#8217;m tagging a calf, I scan the tag and I have the calf registered by the time the second tag goes on \u2014 and I have my card for the calf within the next two days.&#8221;\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h2>Animal movements \u2014 cert codes in the buyer&#8217;s hands before the calves leave the yard<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        The Crowleys sell most of their calves direct off the farm. Herdwatch\n        has made that process significantly faster. Rather than waiting until\n        after a buyer leaves to deal with the movement cert, Louise completes\n        the movement form while the buyer is still picking their calves.\n        As a result, if the buyer is on Herdwatch or online, they can have\n        the cert accepted before the animals even leave the yard.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"hw-quote\">\n        &#8220;It&#8217;s really changed how we work animal movements on the farm. When a buyer comes in, they can pick their calves as I do up the movement form \u2014 and I can give them the movement cert codes straight away. They have it accepted even before the calves leave the yard.&#8221;\n      <\/div>\n\n      <p>\n        Furthermore, the ability to text the movement number directly to the\n        buyer from within the app saves additional time and removes another\n        step from the process entirely.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <h2>Dosing in the parlour pit \u2014 and no more working out withdrawal dates<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        Medicine recording is another area where Herdwatch has removed friction\n        from the working day. When Louise buys something at the vet, she scans\n        the code on the product straight away. By the time she gets home, it\n        is already on her system. Moreover, the withdrawal period is tracked\n        automatically \u2014 so there is no need to calculate dates manually.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"hw-quote\">\n        &#8220;If you&#8217;re in the pit and you tube a cow while milking, it&#8217;s just as easy to get the phone out, pick the cow number, and straight away it tells you how long she&#8217;s out of the tank \u2014 and it notifies you when she&#8217;s eligible to go back in. You don&#8217;t even have to work out the dates for yourself.
