As a result, Scottish Government have implemented precautionary movement restrictions at the farm of the affected animals&#8217; origin, as well as three other sites where cattle had access to the same feed. The case was identified through routine surveillance and control measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symptoms of BSE:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Cattle affected by BSE may show various signs over a period of weeks or months, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Change in behaviour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nervousness or apprehension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exaggerated reactions to touch or sound.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakness, particularly in the hind legs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reluctance to move through doors, or near drains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggression towards humans or other cattle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manic behaviour during milking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holding head low.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty in rising.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tremors under the skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of body condition, weight, or milk yield.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive nose licking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">BSE infects cattle and attacks their central nervous system, often proving fatal. Cows over the age of four that die on farm are routinely tested for BSE. If you notice any of these symptoms in your herd, it&#8217;s crucial to notify the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How is BSE spread?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">BSE is spread through contaminated feed. The inedible parts of a cow&#8217;s carcass are cooked, dried, and ground into powder, which is then used in various products, including animal feed. Cattle become infected by consuming contaminated feed, which contains abnormal prions from sick cows.
