Farming in Fivemiletown, Co. Tyrone, Chris Johnston is a name that will ring a bell with many farmers in Northern Ireland and further afield. Chris is farming on a part-time basis with his partner Kendall, and the duo run a suckler farm with store cattle, and keep sheep too. Chris has a business specialising in cattle pregnancy scanning, embryo transfer, and artificial insemination (AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on how he keeps a record of all the interactions he has with cattle on a daily basis, Chris said: \u201cGoing back to pen and paper is definitely a thing of the past.\u201d<\/strong> The Tyrone farmer and scanning technician noted that in the past he had issues keeping records when out working with cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris is a third-generation farmer and keeps pedigree Limousin cattle, commercial cattle and Dutch spotted sheep. He explained: \u201cI don\u2019t keep big number of them, I keep a few of the best quality and then I take embryos out of them and put them into recipients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on how he manages his business, Chris explained: \u201cMy job on the road consists of a lot of scanning. \u201cDairy farmers would comprise 70% of my work and they need precise dates of all animal activity. \u201cWe manage breeding on a few farms and we use\u00a0Herdwatch<\/span> on them too.
