It is important to take some time to review everything around calf rearing on the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Best practice tips for calf health and welfare<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what are the things we need to take into consideration to ensure calves are in good health at this time of year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow sufficient\u00a0<strong>space<\/strong>\u00a0for calves to reduce the risk of disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure access to clean fresh<strong>\u00a0water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Routine<\/strong>\u00a0is very important with calves \u2013 form one and try to stick to it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain\u00a0<strong>clean bedding<\/strong>\u00a0for calves at all times\u2013 preferably in the form of straw.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are tight on space,do not add more calves to the already settled pens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plan ahead<\/strong>\u00a0of the calving season, to allow for extra space like new shed or hutches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weather permitting opt to get some early born calves to\u00a0<strong>grass<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not mix<\/strong>\u00a0younger and older calves in the same area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure all pens, are\u00a0<strong>cleaned and disinfected<\/strong>\u00a0before bringing in a second crop of calves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep all\u00a0<strong>calf registrations<\/strong>\u00a0up to date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Move out<\/strong>\u00a0any calves you are selling as soon as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure your later born calves are getting\u00a0<strong>enough colostrum<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clean and disinfect<\/strong>\u00a0dump buckets, calf feeding bottles and other equipment, these tend to accumulate dirt and are the primary carrier of disease over the busy period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As the calving season progresses calving pens become a major source for\u00a0<strong>cryptosporidium scour infection<\/strong>\u00a0for newborn calves.\u00a0<strong>Clean and disinfect<\/strong>\u00a0these or move them to a new calving area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Sick calves lead to more work and more stress which is the last thing a farmer needs during a busy calving season.
