Preventing cryptosporidiosis in calves: Symptoms, causes, and effective management

Cryptosporidiosis or ‘crypto’, as most farmers know it is one of the most common and costly causes of calf scour in Ireland. Caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium, it attacks the calf’s gut, leading to watery diarrhoea, rapid dehydration, and in severe cases, death.

According to reports from DAFM veterinary services, up to 40% of calf deaths in the first six weeks of life are linked to scour.

Given how quickly spring-calving herds turn over in January through April, crypto in calves can spread through a calf shed before you’ve even had time to draw breath.

What are the symptoms of cryptosporidiosis in calves?

Calves typically pick up the cryptosporidium parasite shortly after birth and begin showing signs of scour between five and seven days old. The most common symptoms include:

  • Watery or loose stools, often pale or yellowish in colour
  • Mucus, blood, undigested milk or bile in the stool
  • Weakness or lethargy, e.g., the calf may be slow to rise
  • Loss of appetite and visible weight loss
  • Suckler calves going off the cow and lying away from the herd
  • Straining visibly when passing faeces

A scouring calf loses fluids and electrolytes at a dangerous rate, so early identification is critical. If you’re seeing these signs, act quickly.

Where does cryptosporidium come from?

The parasite spreads through the faeco-oral route where infected calves pass enormous numbers of oocysts (eggs) in their scour, contaminating bedding, water troughs, soil and feeding equipment.

An infected calf can shed up to one million oocysts per gram of faeces. Any calf that ingests contaminated bedding or water can quickly become infected in turn.

Crucially, calves can begin shedding oocysts into the environment as early as two days old, well before they show any visible symptoms. This is why a seemingly healthy pen can be harbouring the infection without you realising it.

Farm workers are also a potential source of transmission. Footwear and clothing can carry oocysts between pens, between farms, or in from the yard. Strict hygiene at calf shed entrances is essential.

How does crypto infect calves?

Once ingested, the cryptosporidium parasite attaches to the wall of the calf’s gut, causing damage that reduces its ability to digest food, hence the watery crypto scour.

While attached, it multiplies rapidly, producing new oocysts that either reinfect the same calf or are shed into the environment.

Symptoms typically appear three to five days after initial infection, and the calf may continue shedding oocysts for two weeks or more after that, even once it appears to have recovered.

This extended shedding window is one of the main reasons crypto in calves is so difficult to stamp out once it takes hold in a shed.

Getting the right diagnosis

Not all calf scour is caused by cryptosporidium. Rotavirus, coronavirus and E. coli can produce very similar symptoms, and the correct treatment depends on the pathogen involved.

If you have calves scouring on farm, get your vet out to take faecal samples for laboratory diagnosis. Treating for the wrong cause wastes time, money and most importantly risks losing the calf.

How to prevent crypto in calves

There is no single silver bullet for preventing cryptosporidiosis. Effective control comes from managing both the environment and the animals.

Environmental

  • Keep the calving area clean and dry: cryptosporidium oocysts do not survive well in dry conditions
  • Use a licensed cryptosporidium disinfectant at the entrance to the calf shed
  • Muck out pens, steam clean and disinfect as frequently as possible
  • Let pens dry fully before restocking with new calves
  • Use agricultural lime on bedding to help keep it clean and dry
  • Implement rodent and fly control as both can carry infection between pens

Animal management

  • Vaccinate pregnant cows against rotavirus, coronavirus and E. coli before calving, this boosts the antibody content of their colostrum and helps protect calves against multiple scour pathogens
  • Do not mix older calves with young calves
  • Isolate any scouring calves immediately, always feed and handle healthy calves before sick ones
  • Use separate, dedicated feeding equipment for sick calves and disinfect thoroughly after each use
  • Keep all calves warm, calf jackets can help, but ensure they are washed and disinfected with a licensed cryptosporidium disinfectant between uses

Crypto treatment

There is no antibiotic cure for cryptosporidiosis, so treatment is focused on keeping the calf alive and hydrated while the infection runs its course. Start oral electrolyte therapy as soon as scour is observed. Give two litres of oral electrolytes two to four times a day and continue for at least 48 to 72 hours.

Continue offering normal amounts of milk or milk replacer alongside the electrolytes as calves need the energy. For suckler calves, always try to maintain access to the cow.

If a calf has stopped suckling, feed via a teat bottle or stomach tube rather than leaving it without nutrition.

A licensed treatment product is available to both reduce the severity of crypto scour in calves and limit oocyst shedding so ask your vet about the right product for your herd. Early intervention dramatically improves outcomes.
